On "Keep It Funkin," XL Middleton delivers a modern take on the sound of 1990's g-funk, the sound perfected by producers such as Dr. Dre, Warren G, DJ Quik, and Battlecat. Instead of resorting to outdated "gangsta" lyrical cliches, XL keeps the focus on the relentless funk of the instrumental, allowing a generous peppering of vocoder (performed by Middleton himself) to serve as the only vocals heard on the track. This single release is designed to whet the appetites of modern funksters as XL prepares a full EP, to be released 2014.

I plan on finding this (now) out of print 7". The INKSWEL track is very unique, though it may need more time to grow on me, but the XL MIDDLETON track is very easy to get into. James Reeno (Spazzoid Records, NYC)

As i used to hear more mellow hip-hop(ed) instrumentals by this genius called Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble analogue lover, than sampler (lover), this mellow funk spectrum is a unexpected (or not) suprise by him. Hard to choose the best track... That was made to be played in my cassette deck and LIVE Radio Show... Magic... Yiannis Nova Dorakis
